How to enable dark theme on Android One Phone?

In this post, we will see how to enable dark theme on Android One Phone. In this example, I am using Nokia 6.1 Plus which is running Android One version 9.


Dark theme is getting popular among users nowadays. There are some advantages of using a dark theme.
  • It is less stressful to the eye especially when using it in a dark environment or at night. 
  • And the most important part is that dark theme uses less battery. Light themes are brighter and thus uses more power.

To enable dark theme on Android One phone (version 9, in this case), do the following:
  • Open Android Phone Settings
  • Navigate to Display > Advanced > Device Theme
  • Choose Dark from the options
As you may observe, enabling the dark theme does not turn the settings page dark. It looks like the dark theme setting does not apply across the device. You may explore what else is turned to dark.

As shown in the video above, the notification area and the app drawer areas are dark. Whereas, the phone dialer and the default SMS apps are not. But the phone dialer and the default SMS apps has its own settings to enable dark theme from its respective settings.

There are apps which supports the dark theme. And if you want to, then you can explore the settings of each apps if it has a dark mode in its settings. Calculator is one such apps which supports dark theme.
